A CORNISH endurance rider has claimed a superb victory in a gruelling 65km challenge across the Welsh countryside.

Jessie Lethbridge, who is based near Liskeard, took first place in the Welsh Dragon Competitive Endurance Ride at the British Horse Feeds Festival of Endurance.

Partnering her 15-year-old Arabian gelding, Mountedgcumbe Velveteen, known as Monty, Jessie tackled the demanding hills and terrain around the Begwyns and Aberedw in mid-Wales.

The pair finished ahead of the field after producing a carefully paced performance across 65km of challenging countryside.

Competitive endurance riding sees horses and riders race against the clock and each other, with final results dependent on horses passing stringent veterinary checks. Monty passed every inspection, demonstrating his fitness and recovery after the demanding course.

The victory was particularly special for Jessie after an injury earlier this year disrupted her competitive season.

She said: “Everything about the weekend was fantastic. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Dragon ride with such glorious weather, and the ground rode beautifully.

“Monty was just eating up the miles on the second loop. He definitely has his own opinions and likes things done his way, but he will give you his absolute heart and soul.

“We both felt that surge of adrenaline as we turned for home, and to come away with the win after a season held back by injury makes this victory so incredibly special.”

Despite standing at just 14.2 hands, Monty proved his stamina and determination against the field.

Jessie, who has been involved in endurance riding since taking part in pleasure rides at the age of eight, praised the event organisers, volunteers and veterinary teams for delivering a successful weekend.

She also highlighted the sport’s supportive community and the opportunity to explore spectacular countryside on horseback.

The Cornish partnership will now enjoy a winter break at home before returning to competition next season.
