THE community came together in Newquay today (Friday, May 16) to help inspire young people to pursue their future careers in Cornwall.

The inaugural Empowering Newquay’s Future was held at Newquay Orchard, and was designed to showcase what local businesses, organisations and charities have to offer.

Hundreds of students from Treviglas Academy and Newquay Tretherras School as well as members of the public attended an immersive experience of workshops, live demonstrations, and engaging showcases from local employers.

Among the organisations that took part included Hendra Holiday Park, Newquay Activity Centre, Alma Artspace, Headland Hotel, BBC Cornwall, Spaceport Cornwall and Wildcard PR.

Attendees were able to get hands-on with tools of the trade, try out creative activities and discover what makes Newquay’s businesses such exciting places to work.

Various organisations helped to organise Empowering Newquay’s Future, which included Newquay Orchard, Newquay BID, Blystra Arts, Newquay Town Council, Cornwall Careers Hub and Young People Cornwall.

Gemma Lewry from Imagine Outdoors CIC said: “It has been great to have lots of young people coming through during the day.

“They have been really interested in what we do and chat about what it’s like to have a career outdoors.”

Newquay BID manager Mark Warren added: “It is great to showcase that there are so many opportunities for people who live in Newquay to stay and work here.

“Empowering Newquay’s Future is a great event as it is not just a standard careers event.”

Dean Hodge from Newquay Orchard said: “The event could not have been more perfect.

“All our hard efforts have come to fruition.

“Every business I have spoken to have been happy with the event and it’s been very inspiring to see the students engaging with the businesses and getting inspired about their future careers.”

Mayor Cllr Drew Creek said: “The event builds on the town council’s commitment to the youth of Newquay and ensuring that we show them there are opportunities in both Newquay and Cornwall for careers. It shows they can have a great life here and that they do not need to leave Cornwall.”

Town councillor Liz Wright said: “Empowering Newquay’s Future has showed how powerful the community can be when it comes together.”
