Truro and Kenwyn residents have voted in favour of the revised Neighbourhood Development Plan.

A whopping 83.5  per cent voted for, with 15.9 per cent voting against. The turnout was 13.7 per cent, which is in keeping for large NDP referenda for England.

Neighbourhood Plans help to control development in local areas, setting policies that are used in planning decisions by Cornwall Council. The revised plan for Truro and Kenwyn – produced following extensive consultation with residents, the business community and visitors - includes policies that will shape how the neighbourhood will evolve in terms of environment, employment, housing, education, culture and leisure, and open spaces in the period up to 2030.

Welcoming the positive result, Councillors Steve Webb and Karen La Borde, joint vice chairs of the Truro and Kenwyn NDP committee, said the changes set out in the revised plan will give local people a much stronger voice in ensuring that future development around Truro, Threemilestone and Shortlanesend is of a higher quality and meets the needs of existing and future residents.

“By voting ‘yes’, local people have supported policies that will help protect the countryside, provide stronger control over new development, set higher standards for the design, quality and sustainability of new buildings and places, and help to breathe new life into the city centre” they said.  “This is a key moment for Truro and Kenwyn and we would like to thank residents and business for their help during the development of the plan and for their support in the referendum”.

Cornwall Council will now be using the NDP policies when deciding planning applications.
