WEATHER is the key player at open-air events. In Cornwall, this can often lead to a triumph of hope over experience.

For Grampound Fete and Carnival on Saturday, September 6, the weather gods were in different moods. The sun shone in a cloudless sky, but the wind was having none of it. The children's bouncy castle had to be deflated for safety’s sake, while we at CHBN were forced to abandon our inflatable gazebo. Thankfully, our contribution to the festivities was unaffected.

Naturally, the greater part of Truro's Community and Hospital Radio output comes from its Royal Cornwall Hospital studios. But when the occasion demands, radio is taken into the community.

One of the many services CHBN offers is the provision of music and PA to any local group holding an outside event, from fetes and carnivals to rallies and fundraisers.

Playing music suitable for the occasion, or at the special request of participants, helps the event go with a swing, while the public address mic gives the organisers their voice to the crowd - to announce the timetable or lost and found, for example.

Grampound Fete has been part of the village fabric for over 80 years. All the much-loved stalls and competitions were there this year: tombolas, cakes, a treasure hunt and the traditional duck race. Children’s activities were set out on the lawn, with a part squared off for the ancient worm-charming competition. The evening carnival, meanwhile, showcased the ingenious artistic skills of the entrants.

Events like these bring all ages in the community together. If we can help you with yours, email [email protected] or visit www.chbnradio.org.

CHBN is on air 24/7 on 100.8 FM, online and with the NHS Wi-Fi in hospital. It can be reached via the CHBN Radio App and on smart speaker.
