A CCTV crackdown has been launched at a Liskeard park after anti-social behaviour, alcohol and drug misuse led to vandalism and damage to facilities.

A new camera has been installed at Castle Park following concerns about repeated incidents at the popular community space.

The £11,000 project, led by Liskeard Town Council, will extend surveillance across the park in a bid to deter troublemakers and catch those responsible for criminal damage.

The camera is now fully operational and linked directly to the East Cornwall CCTV Control Room at New County Hall in Truro.

Liskeard Town Mayor Councillor David Braithwaite said the move had been prompted by “ongoing issues of antisocial behaviour”.

“The police have supported the extension of the CCTV because of ongoing issues of anti-social behaviour resulting in the vandalism of play equipment and facilities,” he said.

The camera has been backed by the Friends of Castle Park, Liskeard Scouts, Liskeard Traders Association and Liskeard Town Forum, along with Cornwall Councillor Kevin Grey.

The project has been funded jointly by the Police and Crime Commissioner’s office and the town council.

A £5,500 grant was secured from Commissioner Alison Hernandez’s Community Action Fund, with Liskeard Town Council providing the remaining £5,500.

The grant came from £250,000 made available last year to help local authorities improve and expand CCTV networks.

Commissioner Hernandez said people should be able to use parks and public spaces without feeling threatened by crime or anti-social behaviour.

“Everyone deserves to feel safe when using parks and public spaces in their community,” she said.

The park is heavily used by families, young people and community groups, making the damage caused by antisocial behaviour particularly concerning.

The town council hopes the new camera will act as a visible warning to those responsible for causing trouble, while providing police with crucial evidence when incidents take place.
