RESIDENTS have called on authorities to clampdown on a group of young people allegedly causing antisocial behaviour at a Newquay beauty spot.

People who live along St Thomas Road say they have submitted multiple requests to Devon and Cornwall Police and Cornwall Council to take action against the gang hiding in the woods within Trenance Garden who have reportedly been engaging in drug use, littering, vandalism and generating loud noise.

Resident Jacqueline Smith claims the authorities have not stepped forward to resolve the issue, which had led to “fears about public safety.”

Devon and Cornwall Police stated it has not been made aware of any specific reports relating to the concerns at Trenance Garden but would send an officer to visit the location to “get an understanding of what is happening.”

Trenance Cornwall councillor Drew Creek, who is also the Newquay mayor, added he was unaware of the situation and has given assurances he will look into it.

Jacqueline Smith, in a letter to Cornwall Council, said: “There have been ongoing and escalating issue with anti-social behaviour, illegal camping, and severe property damage at Trenance Garden. Previous reports to official channels have not resulted in any action, and local residents are deeply concerned for public safety.

“A group of young adults is illegally accessing Trenance Garden by repeatedly breaking the gate along the trail behind Newquay Hospital. The group is hiding in the woods within Trenance Garden, engaging in drug use, severe littering, vandalism, and generating loud noise 24/7, which can be clearly heard from Thomas Road.

“We strongly suspect this same group was responsible for starting the wildfire in Trenance Garden last year, which required emergency response from the fire brigade to extinguish.

“Neighbours have submitted multiple reports via CrimeStoppers and police non-emergency. To date, no authorities or council teams have attended the site to inspect the damage or clear the area. Because the group remains hidden in the woods and continues to cause damage and disruption, we have no choice but to reach out publicly. We urgently request that the council coordinate with local law enforcement to inspect the Trenance Garden woods. Secure and repair the broken access gate behind Newquay Hospital to prevent further trespassing.

“Clean up the waste and drug paraphernalia left in the woods of Trenance garden. We look forward to hearing how this will be addressed.”

A police spokesperson said: “We have not been made aware of any specific reports relating to this.

“However, an officer will visit the location to get an understanding of what is happening. We encourage any concerned residents to report crime to us via 101 or our website or by 999 in case of an emergency.”

Cllr Creek, responding to a request for a comment following the concerns raised, said: “Thanks for bringing this to my attention it’s the first I’ve heard of these issues the resident hasn’t emailed me, but I’ll pick it up.”

Cornwall Council has been approached for comment.
