Plans to build a Cornwall Council hub in Liskeard have been supported by the town council despite concerns about the scheme in the community.

Liskeard’s planning committee has voted to support the proposal to create an Integrated Services Hub at the former Cattle Market site.

Councillors stated the council hub, which is due to accommodate various services, would support the viability and vitality of the town centre.

But some residents have opposed the plans as they believe the scheme will have a detrimental impact on the businesses in the town centre as the hub is earmarked to be built on car parking space. They also argue many people rely on the car park to access Rosedean Surgery, a chiropractic clinic and the Market Cafe.

Opponents believe there are enough empty buildings in Liskeard to accommodate the offices due to be created in the council hub.

The planning committee said: “The committee noted and shared some of the concerns about the loss of car parking. However, the development offered a significant positive commercial impact with jobs in the town centre increasing footfall and supporting the viability and vitality of the town centre.

“The new development would secure jobs and services in Liskeard, streamlining services and making some more accessible.

“Enquiries would be made at the next Liskeard Redevelopment Group meeting about providing replacement parking elsewhere on the site.”

Cornwall planners are due to have the final say on the scheme.
