A TOURIST attraction in Newquay has backed a new scheme to encourage reading and library use across Cornwall.

Blue Reef Aquarium Newquay at Towan promenade has joined forces with Cornwall Libraries to champion the new loyalty card scheme that launched early 2026.

The scheme has been created to encourage children and adults to visit their local library all year round.

The premise is that after borrowing books, attending events and clubs, or using library computers, library users collect loyalty stamps. Once they’ve collected six stamps they are entered into a monthly prize draw for rewards like cinema tickets, meals, and family attraction passes.

Blue Reef Aquarium was keen to support the initiative donating 10 children’s aquarium tickets for the lucky prize winners.

Steve Matchett, general manager of Blue Reef Aquarium, said: “We’re delighted to support a scheme that encourages children to pick up a book or engage in local community events.

“Reading, especially at a young age, can be the key for young people to unlock a better understanding of the world around them, and spark curious imaginations into life.

“At the aquarium, we love to marry education and imagination, whether it’s talking about Omiros, our rescued sea turtle, or engaging visitors on the challenges of trying to feed fussy-eating sharks, so offering our support to this scheme was a pleasure.”

Blue Reef Aquarium is among a number of Cornwall-based businesses to have offered their backing.

Councillor Sarah Preece added: “We are very grateful to the local businesses and organisations who have supported this initiative and generously donated prizes.

“We hope the loyalty card scheme will encourage people to discover everything Cornwall’s libraries offer throughout the year.”

The scheme is available to both adults and children to promote year-round library use.
