An old billboard on Lostwithiel Street, Fowey has been revitalised by a community art project involving Fowey resident Claire Hoddinott, local artist Gretchen Viehmann, Fowey River Academy, Fowey Town Council and Cornwall Council.

The art work was designed by Fowey River Academy students under the theme “Fowey and Cornish life”.

Carla Moorcroft, head of art at Fowey River Academy, said: “It is amazing to see the students’ work displayed in the community. I know they’re feeling a sense of pride.

“The art work not only brightens up this space over the gloomy winter months but develops the school’s links to the community and nurtures the aspirations of our young artistic talent.”

The work is temporary, being printed onto paper and pasted to the wall in the same way that advertising posters would have once adorned the wall years ago.

Whilst it is acknowledged that the work won’t last long, it is also seen as a chance for the space to change, giving the opportunity for other community groups and artists to display their work.

Claire Hoddinott, resident and school governor, said: “Thank you to everyone involved in the project, Fowey Town Council who provided financial support, Cornwall Council and Cormac for their permission but especially to Robin at Graphique Media Solutions Ltd for his assistance with the printing.”

Fowey artist Gretchen Viehmann said: “It’s a joy to see such wonderful young talent showcased here and may this be the beginning of a great new Fowey tradition.”
