A DOG was rescued after falling off a cliff near Bedruthan Steps on Monday night (May 4).

Newquay and Padstow Coastguard teams along with Padstow RNLI attended the incident at Park Head at 9.20pm.

Padstow RNLI onboard its Y boat entered the cove and managed to retrieve the dog before transferring the animal to the all-weather lifeboat.

The dog had been missing since the morning.

The owners were reunited with their dog at Padstow Lifeboat Station.

A spokesperson for Padstow RNLI said: “The team received reports of a dog over the cliff at Park Head.

“Once on scene, team members met with the first informant and were shown the location of the dog, which was at the bottom of the cliff amongst rocks.

“The team set up for a cliff rescue and requested Newquay Coastguard Rescue Team as backup, as is standard practice for cliff jobs.

“Meanwhile Padstow RNLI arrived on scene and, after speaking with the coxswain, it was decided that they would attempt to enter the cove using their Y-boat.

“The team illuminated the cove and directed the lifeboat crew members to the location of the dog.

“Newquay Coastguard Rescue Team then arrived on scene to assist, as the team was standing-by, ready to deploy a cliff technician if the Y-boat was unable to reach the dog.

“The dog was successfully rescued by the lifeboat crew and was returned to the all-weather lifeboat.

“Although the circumstances of how this dog ended up at the bottom of the cliff are not clear we would like to remind people to please keep dogs on leads on or near the coast.

“A dog might follow a smell or an instinct and run off to explore.

“We are so pleased that this dog could be rescued and reunited with its owners on this occasion.”
