Outgoing St Austell manager Mark Smith says he will take ‘a season or two’ away from football after admitting he has lost enthusiasm for the game.
Smith was talking after overseeing his final home game against neighbours St Blazey on Good Friday, where the Green & Blacks ended as 4-0 winners.
Smith told the Voice: “In terms of my future in local football, it’s most certainly a season or two away from the game as I’ve lost the enthusiasm for it temporarily.
“I’m only 34 though, so there’s no reason why I won’t return further down the line, possibly even to St.Austell as it’s my hometown club and I probably stepped into the role too soon in my managerial career.
“I will absolutely be supporting the club in any way I can, most notably in the transition to the new management team for next season.”
Of Friday’s match, Smith said: “It was a frustrating morning as I felt that we were in the game and actually on top for long periods.
“If we had gone in front, which we had some opportunities to do, then the game might have been different as we could’ve cranked up the pressure on them.
“But the story of our season is that we seem to concede and not score ourselves when we were on top and then lack the belief that we can score two to get back into the game.
“But again, the lads gave us everything they had physically and I can’t ask any more of them than that as our season draws to a close with little on the line.”
The Lillywhites complete their SWPL season away to Callington Town tonight (7.30pm).
