CRFU DUCHY SHIELD FINAL

St Austell Sinners 57 Saltash Seconds 7

THE Saints paid tribute to club legend Richard ‘Gilby’ Gilbert by winning the Duchy Shield final at Falmouth on Saturday.

A minute’s silence was impeccably observed by everybody present, including Richard’s brother, Alastair.

Once the action did get underway the Sinners ripped into the contest from the start and winger Dan Navas scored in the corner after just two minutes. The waves of red and white attacks kept coming and a brilliant break by Garry Hooper and Alex Welland, found prop poacher in chief Matt Trahair out on the wing to score in the opposite corner (10-0).

George Tregilgas was having an excellent game pulling the strings at fly-half and he spotted a gap to glide over under the posts, and from the restart Dan Navas beat two defenders to score his second of the afternoon.

The large travelling Sinners support gave the biggest cheer of the afternoon when No.8 Jack Grigg, playing in his 250th game for the club, powered over following a scrum surge to establish a 29-0 lead.

The Ashes who fought valiantly throughout the afternoon grabbed a consolation right on the whistle through Brett Jennison to make the half-time score 29-7.

The second half got underway with the Sinners now with the breeze and slope but Saltash defended well to keep the rampant red and white at bay.

It took a powerful surge from teenager Riley Raikes, chosen as man-of-the-match by CRFU president Andy Reed, to kick-start the scoreboard.

River Nowell, Peter Tuckley, and the Wheeler brothers Andrew and Peter were all introduced, injecting renewed vigour to the fray.

Three converted tries in the last 10 minutes from Alex Welland, skipper Tom Hinks and Andrew Wheeler made the final score 57-7.
