PAPA JOHN’S COMMUNITY CUP COUNTIES ONE CHAMPIONSHIP (ROUND-TWO)

Pirates Amateurs 57 Sherborne 10

THE Pirates eased into the next round with an emphatic 57-10 over Dorset at the Mennaye Field.

On a day which saw home prop James Lambourn make his 100th appearance, the Pirates scored early on through skipper Stan Somers, with full-back Ben Wragg adding the extras.

Wragg crossed himself, and when home prop Joe Best also powered over, they had a healthy lead.

Sherborne had their moments, but two more tries before the break all but ended the contest.

First, winger Dan Rhys-Evans dotted down before flanker Eli Williams did likewise, which followed a clever kick out of hand by man-of-the-match fly-half Sam Cahill.

Sherborne impressed without reward after the break, but the Pirates then added to their 31-0 lead.

Replacement Sam Coogan set up scrum-half Jake Hole, and space was created for centre Josh Semmens to follow up with another. Both tries were converted by Wragg.

The efforts of the Dorset side were eventually rewarded when, after good work from Olly Whittaker and Sonny Staunton, fly-half Chris Reed who lent support and crossed at the scoreboard corner.

The Pirates responded with a converted try scored by No.8 Archie Pilcher, before Reed got his second for the visitors.

However, it was the ‘Ams’ who had the last say when Evans stretched to score his second try of the afternoon.

Brunel University, who are coached by former Cornish Pirates prop Marlen Walker, provide the opposition in London in the quarter-final on Saturday, May 3.
