NEWQUAY Rowing Club saw their under 25s team crowned world champions on the Isles of Scilly in early May.
They along with six other teams from the coastal club competed in the annual World Pilot Gig Championship at St Mary’s.
Newquay as a whole did a fantastic job and came away with superb results, especially considering the conditions which were difficult to say the least.
While the men and women did well, the under 25s event saw Newquay — whose boat was called ‘Hope’ and consisted of Buck Beckett, Freddie Beckett, Cam Law, Leon Emmett, Riley Miller, Adam Casey and Toby Row — emerge victorious; an even more impressive achievement considering the average age of the team was just 19. They also doubled up as the Men’s B team.

On the seniors’ front there were two top ten finishes from the women’s teams as the Vets A (Wayne Row, Ella Cattermoul, Ellie Truscott, Nicky Pender, Bec McCowen-Brown, Alice Bevis and Evey Evi) were fourth out of 30 crews with the B team (Justin Phillips, Amie Bradshaw, Lucy Emmett, Julie King, Nikki West, Jodie Munley and Fay Cattermoul) just past halfway in 18th.

The Women’s A crew, which consisted of Scruffy Taylor, Serica Bawden, Jenna Gummesson, Georgia Coppes, Natalie Trebilcock and Debbie Blight, did superbly to finish seventh out of 128, with the B squad (Justin Phillips, Evey Evi, Jodie Munley, Julie King, Amie Bradshaw, Charlotte Price and Aileen Greene) 74th.
The Men’s A and B teams qualified for the final in Group B and were separated by just three placings – the A team taking 13th to the B’s 16th.
The A squad was Marcus Bawden, Ryan Bawden, James Coombes, Elliot Bryon, Scott Chapman, Richard Martin and Jason Hicks.

A club spokesperson said: “Well done to all of our crews, you certainly did Newquay proud!”
