Liskeard Athletic 2 Newquay 1

Liskeard had to dig deep to record victory over an impressive Newquay side who battled back well after going 2-0 down inside the opening 15 minutes at Lux Park.

The Blues looked to be on their way to a comfortable three points after goals from Harry Jeffrey (6 minutes) and Dan Jennings (13) gave them the perfect start on a difficult playing surface.

But the Peppermints reduced the arrears seven minutes before half-time with an excellent finish by Jack Rapsey and went on to dominate the second half.

The nearest they came to an equaliser was in the 81st minute when Liskeard goalkeeper Sam Borthwick made two stunning saves and a third Newquay effort was hacked away inside the six yard box.

Liskeard had their chances to kill the game on the break but Ryan Richards, James Rowe and particularly Jennings were unable to convert good opportunities.

The home side included new signings Ruben Kane, the former Bodmin Town captain, striker Ryan Richards, the Torpoint Athletic striker, signed on SWPL forms in midweek, and goalkeeper Borthwick.

But Liskeard suffered an injury setback when midfield man Jarrad Woods limped out of the action after 18 minutes with a hamstring strain which is likely to keep him out for several weeks.
