CORNWALL’S senior teams were in action over the penultimate weekend of March (21 and 22) as they headed up to Bath University for the final round of fixtures of the 2025/26 Senior County Championships Division Two South West season.

The mid-table first team took on Devon B on Saturday, and after a close match where five games went the distance of three ends, it was the Duchy who triumphed 7-4 to begin in style.

A tough match against Dorset A followed and a stunning victory 8 games to 3 ended the first day.

On the last day, the team got even better - against a strong Avon side, they emphatically won by 10 games to one, to leap up the table to the top, to tie on points with Devon A but agonisingly miss promotion by the narrowest of margins by only three games.

This young team can be enormously proud of their season and the progress they have made, winning all bar one of their matches across six months.

Cornwall’s B team can be proud too, after an excellent weekend, and showing their potential and improvements across the season. Three of the team are under 18, one playing in the senior county side for the first time, and the team includes players from across Cornwall gelling well together.

First up for them were a side from Somerset, who they beat 7-4, followed by an even bigger victory against the Isle of Wight, a stunning 9 games to 2.

Those results meant they finished third in Division Four South West, an excellent result for this young, fast improving team, all pointing to a bright future for Cornwall Badminton.

THE club’s ladies section hosted the Atlantic and Headland Cups on Sunday, March 22, with ladies from all over Cornwall, Devon and even Hampshire taking on the challenges.

Twenty ladies competed in the Headland Cup, a Stableford competition. The winner with 38 points was Newquay's Roz O'Shea, just beating former Newquay member Liz Bird on countback. Bev Bell from West Cornwall was third with 36 points.

Fifteen ladies competed in the Atlantic Cup, a Medal competition. Falmouth Golf Club’s Carmel Connors took victory with a nett 67, two shots ahead of club-mate Cara Rowe. Newquay's Abi Crosswood was third with nett 70.

There was frustration for members two days later as the captains against vice-captains competition was abandoned yet again because of inclement weather.

The ladies competed in their seventh and final Winter League competition on Tuesday, March 31. Taking the honours were Debbie Cain and Roz O'Shea with 45 points. Kathy Adams and Janet Cox were second with 40 points, on count-back from Michelle Burgess and Lesley Pocklington.

The overall winner for the Winter League series was Debbie Cain who amassed a whopping 99 points, 17points clear of runner-up Janet Cox. Sue Phillips took third place with 81.

The honours in the nine-hole Stableford went to Susan Waters with 22 points. Anne Poole was second with 16 points, one ahead of Lorna Parfitt who took third on countback from Jo Toms.

Annie Lobb and Debbie Cain have secured a home match against Cape Cornwall in the Daily Mail Foursomes.

St Blazey and District Snooker League by Geoff Hawken

TWENTY-six players took to the green baize at Bethel Social Club on Saturday, March 28 to play in the 13th Boynton Trophy in honour of the late secretary, Gordon Boynton.

As usual it was a 10am and as ever some big names were knocked out early.

The semi-finals saw Jamie Daniell beat Mark Ashton and Andrew Best get the better of Jason Pascoe to set up a great final with many players still in attendance.

The final was a tight affair which swung around when Andrew potted the blue and the white ball went in off, leaving Jamie to pot a great blue off its spot and calmly stroke the pink in to clinch the title.

In the Seniors final played at Mevagissey, newcomer Ian Millward lifted the trophy as he beat Chris Perring by three frames to nil.

Victory League champions Bethel A were beaten 3-2 by the ‘Rest of the League’ team, whilst Rees League champions St Blazey A won 4-1 when they played the best of their division.

Other end of season competitions have now concluded. Mevagissey A beat their C team by 3-1 in the Team Plate Handicap final played at St Blazey, and the next night St Neot beat Bethel A in the final of the Team Handicap with wins for Darren Lock, Darren O’Shea and Steve Courts.
