THIS was the scene at Blaise Park, home of St Blazey AFC, on Saturday morning as the winter’s first freezing weekend arrived.
Despite the best efforts of the volunteer ground staff, the South West Peninsula League’s match of the day between the Green & Blacks and leaders Wendron United was an early casualty of the heavy overnight frost.
It was a similar scene throughout the region as all eight premier division west fixtures were frozen off.
AFC St Austell’s game against Penzance, Sticker’s home match against Newquay, and St Dennis’s trip to Liskeard Athletic also succumbed to the cold blast.
One game which did survive was at St Stephen, only nine miles away from St Blazey, where the club reported no frost before their East Cornwall Premier League clash against leaders North Petherwin. The visitors won 5-2 after a goalless first half and a consolation for St Stephen was that their visitors tweeted later that it was the best after-match food they had experienced.
AFC St Austell’s St Piran League fixture went ahead on the all weather surface at Saltash Borough, who won 11-1.
