SWPL PREMIER WEST (WEDNESDAY)
Falmouth Town Reserves 0 Penzance 2
PENZANCE struck twice late on to get their campaign up and running with a 2-0 victory at newly-promoted Falmouth Town Reserves on Wednesday night.
Both sides had lost their openers on Saturday, August 2, the Magpies a 2-1 defeat at home to title hopefuls Liskeard Athletic having led for much of the afternoon, while Falmouth were given a rude awakening at an Elburton Villa side expected to be amongst the frontrunners in a 6-0 defeat.
Penzance boss Mark Vercesi made just one change at Bickland Park as Wade Sullivan came in for the unavailable Lewis Caspall, but it was Falmouth who were the better side early on as they hit the post and found visiting keeper Harry Salmon in the way.
Town continued after the break and Aaron Hicks drew Salmon into action once more, before Ethan Fearn was finally tested when Charlie Willis forced into a fine save.
Charlie Young shot well-wide as the Magpies continued to improve, but Town were a threat and saw skipper Kirk Davies hammer a 30-yard free-kick narrowly wide.
But just as it looked like it maybe a stalemate, a superb individual goal from Ewan Trevains broke the deadlock on 88 minutes after a run down the right.
There was still time for Salmon to produce a remarkable double save as he tipped Reece Carroll’s shot onto the underside of the bar before blocking the follow-up.
Then, with Falmouth pushed right up, Trevains’ chip over the top found Jacob Trudgeon who beat Fearn at his near post to give the Magpies their first three points of the season.
For Falmouth, they have played two of the sides expected to be in the top five, and if they play like that, will pick up plenty of points.
