WESTERN LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION
Newquay 3 Bradford Town 2
NEWQUAY’S summer signing Rhys Simmonds made it four goals in three games as the Peppermints secured their first-ever Step Five victory in a thriller at Mount Wise.
Shaun Middleton’s men went into the game having won 2-0 at Shepton Mallet in the FA Cup during midweek, which was secured thanks to Simmonds and debutant Jamie Lowry, although the latter was unavailable.
Bradford, who are based in Wiltshire, just south of Bath, were also promoted last term and arrived having secured four points from their opening two games.
The game began with Bradford getting off to a lively start, having a shot on goal inside three minutes from Jensen Wakefield which was parried by home keeper Brodie Cole.
But on five minutes the Cornishmen were a goal up as Cam Turner, playing as a sweeper, won the ball back and played a great ball over the head of the visiting right-back for Simmonds to control. He then flicked the ball over the head of the defender before wrong-footing him and then slotting home past the advancing keeper.
Within four minutes Newquay had a second goal when they were awarded a free-kick some 40 yards out.
Up stepped Cam Turner whose skills at free-kicks were obviously not known by the visitors who set up for a cross into the box. However, Turner had one intent and his effort flew in.
Newquay controlled the first half with some direct passing and continued to work the ball from defence to attack, while anytime the visitors did get forward the home defence had little trouble in clearing the danger.
The visitors came out out after the break with a new-found sense of purpose and looked to pressurise the hosts in possession. This certainly worked as their first goal came from the ball being taken off a Newquay player on halfway on 66 minutes. It was quickly moved forward and a precise pass found Wakefield in the box, before he fired a fine finish past the diving Cole.
That gave Bradford the leg-up they needed and within six minutes had grabbed a second, helped by some poor defending.
They were allowed to win the ball near the right corner flag and then turn a cross into the box, which was headed in off the far post by an unmarked Harvey Woods.
Having given away leads against Buckland and Torpoint in their first-ever games at Step Five, home supporters were worried, while the band of supporters from Wiltshire were in fine voice and hopeful of completing a dramatic comeback.
But with five minutes remaining Newquay got the all-important winner.
Striker Jack Bray-Evans saw his shot parried by Thomas Creed which fell at the feet of Owen Johnson.
The sub’s effort was also blocked by the keeper, but at the third time of asking was put into the net by Simmonds to send the majority of the 376 inside the ground into raptures.
Newquay’s inaugural FA Cup journey continues this Saturday when they visit Southern League Division One South outfit Frome Town (3pm).
