WESTERN LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION

Wellington 3 Newquay 3

NEWQUAY’S four-game winning run came to an end on Saturday – but there was plenty for the Peppermints to take away from a see-sawing 90 minutes in difficult conditions in Somerset.

Three times the home side took the lead but three times Newquay responded in a match where chances were created and missed virtually every other minute.

Manager Shaun Middleton said: “It was a strange game to be honest, it could have finished eight-all.

“We got off to a terrible start but quickly equalised and the game then went from end to end with Wellington always going in front.

“The boys worked their socks off but our football was not what it’s been recently, although we created lots of chances.

“On another day we score five but a point on the road in this league is not too bad – we move on.”

From the moment Oscar Albano fired Wellington ahead in the first minute, it was match on with Jack Bray-Evans equalising 60 seconds later.

Tom Stone restored Wellington’s lead in the 23rd minute but again Newquay refused to fold and young attacker Rhys Simmonds drew them level again 11 minutes before half-time.

Chances continued to be created after the break and it was a surprise that it took until the 64th minute for another goal, when Alfie Slough put Wellington ahead for a third time.

But the home side hardly had time to celebrate as Newquay went to the other end and Simmonds made it 3-3.

Newquay are back at Mount Wise on Wednesday night when they face struggling AFC St Austell.
