NEWQUAY have bolstered their midfield options ahead of the upcoming Western League Premier Division campaign with the arrival of Connor Paine.

Paine, 25, joins from Cornish rivals Helston Athletic where he spent last season having moved back to the Duchy following a four-year spell playing college football in the United States of America.

He comes from just outside of St Austell and believes he has made the right decision in committing to a side who have already brought in goalkeeper Shaun Semmens and Mousehole duo Jacob Kevern and Tim Nixon.

On the move, Paine said: “As soon as I spoke to Middsy (Shaun Middleton), I knew it was something I wanted to be part of. Newquay have an exciting history and are now playing at the highest level in their history. It feels like an exciting time to join.”

Connor made 23 appearances across the last campaign, scoring five times.

He added: “I'd say I'm an all-round midfielder. I like to bring a lot of energy to the team. I'd also describe myself as reliable and demanding. I like to set standards, drive the team on, those types of things.

“On the pitch, they'll always get 100% from me. I'll work as hard as I can for the team and hopefully create some good moments throughout the season.”

Paine admits he hopes to be part of a promotion push, adding: "It's not just what they achieved on the pitch last season, but everything that's happening off the pitch as well.

“That was one of the biggest reasons why I wanted to sign for the club. I'm looking forward to competing at the top end of the league. I think we've got a squad that's good enough to challenge. The club had a fantastic first season in the Western League last year and raised a lot of eyebrows across the division. Hopefully, I can add to that, alongside the other new players coming in.”

On his latest recruit, Middleton enthused: “Connor is another quality addition we’ve made this summer. He’s a versatile midfielder who is extremely fit, clean on the ball, and likes to play football the right way. He’ll be a great asset to both the squad and the team. We can’t wait to start working with Connor, and hopefully he can help drive us on this season.

“He’s had a lot of interest from various clubs this summer, so for him to choose us is a great sign of what we’re trying to do at the club.”

Director of Football, Jason Waterman added: “From the moment we spoke to Connor, it was clear he was going to fit in. He brings a real energy and intensity to his game that suits exactly the way we want to play, and that kind of profile in central midfield is invaluable. He’s also just a good person, which matters in a tight-knit group like ours. We’re looking forward to seeing him get started.”

Paine also had a message for the Peppermints faithful, concluding: “One thing I've always noticed when playing against Newquay is the fantastic support and the great atmosphere at Mount Wise. That's been one of Newquay's biggest strengths for years, and I'm sure it will continue. I'm really excited to get started, and hopefully we can go on a great journey together this season and achieve some special things."
