AFTER a promising start to the season with some excellent performances, St Blazey were brought down to earth with a bang at Blaise Park on Saturday as Street ran out 5-0 winners in the Western League Premier Division.

Four days after pushing Newquay all the way in a 2-2 draw at Mount Wise, the Green & Blacks were swept away by their Somerset opponents.

A 40th minute Tom Strike own goal gave Street the advantage before the break and the visitors added four goals in the second half through Freddie Haiden (49, 81), Eli Collins (70) and Zeph Collins (90).

Speaking on Sunday, Blazey boss Mark Carter said: “I took this role on back in January, and up until now, I feel we’ve been competitive in every single game.

“Yesterday was the first time we failed to do that – we didn’t compete, and we need to hold our hands up and own that poor display.

“It’s vital we ensure that level of performance isn’t repeated.”

He went on: “By Friday afternoon I had just nine players available.

“We’re currently missing 11 lads for one reason or another, mostly through injuries. I want to give a huge thank you to Danny Lewis at Elburton Villa for his support – three of his players stepped in to help us out yesterday and we’re very grateful.

“That said, we’re not hiding behind excuses. Even with the squad challenges, we should have been two or three goals up in the first 30 minutes.

“If we could just take our chances, we wouldn’t be putting our back line under so much pressure.”
