WESTERN LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION

Wellington 5 St Blazey 2

ST BLAZEY’S six-match unbeaten league run came to a spectacular end on Saturday as they conceded five goals and had a player sent off at the Carly Press Ground.

The big turning point came seven minutes into the second half. Blazey, already trailing 2-0 to two first half Nathan Byrne goals, gave away a penalty which Douglas Camilo scored.

Shortly afterwards striker Tyler Elliott was sent off, and it wasn’t long before Teigan Rosenquest was ordered to the sin-bin to reduce Blazey temporarily to nine men.

Wellington took full advantage by adding further goals from Camilo (62 minutes) and Sam Towler (66) to give them an unassailable 5-0 advantage.

Centre-half Jordan Bentley (70 minutes) and striker Harry Probyn (85) pulled goals back for the Green & Blacks, but the damage was done.

Manager Mark Carter said: “Sitting here reflecting on yesterday, I’m feeling a little hard done by.

“We headed up knowing it was a game we’d earmarked as a possible three points after a good run in the league. Maybe there was a hint of complacency creeping in.

“Four of Wellington’s goals came from players playing under the dual-registration rule – part and parcel of football, but incredibly frustrating to take on the chin.”

He went on: “We dominated possession in the first half without really asking enough questions, which was disappointing. Two moments of individual brilliance on the break put them 2–0 up, and both were very well taken.

“After some strong words at half-time, we knew the next goal would be huge. Unfortunately, that’s when the man in the middle left his mark on the game.

“In a five-minute spell, he awarded a harsh penalty for handball – the third against us in as many games – and then showed a very questionable red card to Tyler, followed by a sin-bin for Teigan.

“For me, the game wasn’t played in a nasty manner, but the referee seemed determined to take centre stage.

“Down to nine men, we conceded two more goals in that spell. Once we went back to 10, the lads worked hard and the game evened out again.”

He added: “We’ll look to respond immediately on Wednesday night in the Senior Cup, before a tough home test against Bridgwater.”

Blazey were without influential midfield men Sam Clifton (suspended) and Rio Daly (injured) but included former St Austell favourite Kieron Bishop, a new signing from Wadebridge Town, who came off the bench in the second half with a vital contribution.

Wellington, without injured skipper Glen Wright, handed debuts to Harvey Field and Callum Thomas, two new defenders signed from Brixham.

After an even opening, Wellington took control midway through the first half with two goals in three minutes from in-form winger Byrne.

The first came on 26 minutes when he cut in from the left and rifled a fierce drive past Kyle Moore. Moments later, skipper Miles Quick released Byrne, and he coolly slipped the ball home to double the advantage.

Early in the second half, Wellington took a big step towards making the points safe. As the rain poured down, they were awarded a penalty for handball, and Camilo made no mistake from the spot to make it 3-0.

Things went from bad to worse for St Blazey as they were briefly reduced to 10 men, with a player sin-binned, and then to nine when Tyler Elliott was shown a straight red for an ugly foul on Camilo.

Wellington took full advantage. On 62 minutes, Byrne turned provider, crossing for Camilo whose header was blocked, but he reacted quickest to tuck in the rebound for his second.

Four minutes later, Towler added a fifth, driving home after Blazey failed to clear.

To their credit, the visitors kept going and were rewarded late on when Bentley looped in a header after a corner and Probyn raced clear to add another five minutes from time.
