FA CUP (EXTRA PRELIMINARY ROUND)

St Blazey 1 Buckland Athletic 2

ST BLAZEY suffered FA Cup heartbreak when a last minute goal gave Buckland a slender victory at Blaise Park on Saturday.

The Green & Blacks looked well set to make progress in football’s most prestigious competition when Charlie Menear fired them ahead in the 22st minute.

But Buckland grew stronger, especially after the half-time break, and a 66th minute Jake Lane equaliser set up a tense finale.

The visitors’ belief grew and they eventually found a winner when centre-half Scott Pocock rose to head in a last minute corner.

Blazey boss Mark Carter said: “It’s always tough to take when you concede a 90th minute goal, especially one that decides the game.

“That said, I was really pleased with the reaction from the group after midweek, where we felt we let ourselves down with the performance. The response was clear to see and much more like us.

“For 60 minutes, we were in control. We defended incredibly well and did a great job of keeping Buckland’s front three quiet.

“Even after they levelled, we created three excellent chances to go back in front – at this level, you’ve got to take those opportunities when they come.

“The lads put in a real shift. Sam Clifton was outstanding playing out of position at right-back, while young Charlie Menear worked tirelessly up front.

“Missing six from the squad definitely had an impact; where Buckland were able to make changes to maintain their intensity, we found it harder in the final 20 minutes.”
