TRURO City boss John Askey hailed his side's comprehensive win at Sutton United as ‘remarkable’, writes Gareth Davies.

Twelve points adrift from safety before the game, with no fewer than 11 regulars out injured, influential midfielder Caleb Roberts also added to Askey’s selection headaches when recalled from loan by parent club Plymouth Argyle on Thursday.

But the Tinners, who could only name five subs, were totally dominant against a Sutton side who have now conceded eight goals without reply in their past two home matches.

Will Dean gave Truro the lead in the first half with the outstanding Jack Stretton doubling the Cornish outfit’s tally three minutes after the restart. Sutton never looked like mounting a comeback and icing was put on Truro’s cake thanks to Luke Jephcott’s penalty seven minutes from time.

“We scored three and perhaps it should have been six or seven given the chances we had,” Askey said at full-time. “I’m not complaining as to get three goals and not concede, given all we are having to contend with, is really quite remarkable.

“We have been in every game recently and we now go into Wednesday’s game against Solihull a little more buoyed than if we came here and didn’t get a result.”

Under gloriously sunny skies in the capital, Will Dean, joined by his younger brother Tom in the City ranks after signing on loan from Exeter, broke the deadlock.

He curled in a fine free-kick from 25 yards out, finding the top corner with pin point accuracy to give Sims absolutely no chance.

After the restart, Stretton doubled City’s advantage when he turned home Jephcott’s fine centre.

The points were finally made safe inside the final 10 minutes when a penalty was awarded to City for handball and Jephcott made no mistake, to hand Askey’s side a glimmer of hope in their survival hopes.
