Have you heard of Roller Derby? Cornwall is home to two Roller Derby teams and the Penzance-based Rapscallion Rollers are on the hunt for new members.

Along with a sister team based in Newquay (Kernow Krakens), Rapscallion Rollers are part of Cornwall Roller Derby, a league that welcomes skaters of all genders over the age of 18. 

Many members play in competitive bouts for Cornwall, while others just go along to train and play for fun.

Roller Derby is a full contact sport played on quad skates. Gameplay involves two teams each made up of a Jammer, who attempts to score points by sprinting around a flat oval track to lap the pack, and defensive players, who focus on stopping the opposing Jammer and assisting their own team.

The officially recognised sport is quickly increasing in popularity in the UK, with wide-ranging benefits from fun and fitness to confidence-building and teamwork.

Whether you are a competitive skater or just have the urge to try something new, there’s a place for everyone with roles as referees, non-skating officials and committee and coaching positions for those who feel the full-contact aspect of the sport is not for them.

During March, Rapscallion Rollers are running a short course at Penzance Leisure Centre to introduce potential new members to the sport.
