PENZANCE skipper Brad Wadlan believes Saturday’s home clash with fellow title hopefuls Helston are ‘the types of games we all play for’ as both teams prepare for a huge afternoon at St Clare.

Penzance, who are looking to defend their title, went 14 points clear at the top following a convincing 114-run success at bottom side Grampound Road having been dismissed for 259 which included half centuries from Wadlan (58) and Josh Croom (50), while Wadebridge, who went into the day level at the summit, were beaten by six wickets at Helston.

The result meant the Blues moved up to second, a point ahead of Wadebridge who welcome Penzance next Saturday.

It means a vital couple of weeks in the title race, but Wadlan was just delighted to get back on the field following their cancellation at home to St Austell the Saturday before.

Wadlan told the Voice: Having missed out last weekend on playing against St Austell and Wadebridge getting on, we were fully motivated to put in a big performance knowing Helston were taking on Wadebridge.

“But for us, picking up 20 points at Grampound Road was a huge effort because the wicket was fairly tricky. It spun and seamed around, so to get a score of 259, we were very happy.

“There were lots of starts in the batting and guys getting in and spending time in the middle, without anyone really kicking on to get a big one.

“Then with the ball, seven wickets fell to spin so it was a nice change for the spinners to put a shift in.”

Helston ran Wadlan’s men close in the reverse fixture – only going down by 15 runs in pursuit of 175 – and the Wales National Counties player/coach expects a tough afternoon against the Blues who are chasing a maiden Premier League crown.

He concluded: “This week we know Helston will come to St Clare knowing a good performance could out them top of the league, but we are looking forward to the challenge and it’s these types of games we all play for.

“They have a number of match-winners in there team and we are the same, so it’s set up for a brilliant game of cricket.”
