Bond Timber Cornwall Cricket League County Division One round-up – Saturday, June 7
CHAMPIONS Beacon took advantage of Hayle’s misfortune to move within three points of the leaders after a dramatic day in the second tier.
Morning and afternoon rain meant no play was possible between St Erme and Paul, but the other four matches did see play with three to a finish.
But it was Hayle’s abandonment against Newquay which could prove decisive come the season’s end.
Newquay recovered from 44-4 to post 106-7 from their 32 overs thanks to Adam Jenkin (24), Adam Cocking (20) and Callan Jenkin (16no).
Dan Lello (2-8 off 7) led the way with the ball.
Another hour’s delay reduced the target to 84 from 22 overs, and Aizaz Ahmed as raced to 41 not out from just 17 balls as they reached 52-0.
But after 5.2 overs the rain returned and with each side having to bat 20 overs to constitute a match, the game was abandoned with Hayle taking 10 points to Newquay’s eight.
Beacon saw off neighbours Camborne by 11 runs at Tolcarne Road in a 23-over contest.
Beacon reached 68-2 in the tenth over with both Ben (22 off 18) and Sam James (36 off 28) out after quick starts, but the innings was taken on by Jordan Thomas as his 56 from 39 balls in support with Darren Proctor (17 off 32).
They added 40 before Proctor departed, but Thomas went through the gears as Beacon ended on 151-6.
Camborne slipped to 44-3 in the eighth over, but after Liam Weeks and Danuka Dilshan added 45 with Weeks going well on 40, Camborne looked favourites.
But he departed at 120, stumped off Ben James (3-22 off 5), and with Jamie Goldsworthy (22 off 15) and Dan Stephens (2) soon falling to Proctor (2-2 off 1), it was 124-7.
Sam Eva made 11 not out from nine, but Callum Edgcombe (4-28), who had earlier dismissed Josh Fontana and Alfie MacDonald, returned to take two more as Camborne, who are 11 points off top, closed on 143-9.
St Austell Seconds moved up to seventh after seeing off neighbours Roche in a 25-over game.
Roche chose to bat but soon slipped to 29-3.
Dan Robotham returned to form with 35, but after he departed, only James Hunkin with 35 from 30 deliveries got started as they closed on 123-9.
Jack Carter claimed 3-27 with the new ball, off-spinner Ben Carter took 2-16 from his six, while the promising Henry Johnson’s 3-17 slowed Roche at the end.
The chase was a routine affair.
Openers Archie Connolly (39) and Steve Raven (72no off 55) put on 95 before Raven was joined by James Carter (12no) to polish off the rest.
Perranporth continued their good start since promotion as their bowlers set them on the way to victory at Falmouth.
Kiwi Thomas Bradburn took 4-12 from six overs as Fal found themselves 32-5.
Skipper Aidan Carter (12) and Isaac Hurtel-Hymans (25) added 28, but once both were out they slipped to 87 all-out. Spinner Bryn Evans claimed 4-15 from six overs.
A remarkable home victory had a chance when Adrian Noott (2-5 off 5) and Hurtel-Hymans (3-7 off 5) reduced the Pilchards to 3-4.
Skipper Harry Watkins (24no) then dug in as he combined with Bradburn (34 off 38) to their revised target of 78.
