ECB Cornwall Premier League round-up – Saturday, August 2
GRAMPOUND Road are now 15 points clear of trouble following their derby victory over visiting St Austell.
After choosing to bat, the Roadies continued their fine batting form as they amassed a healthy 246 all out.
Skipper Tom Orpe made 46 before departing at 77-3 to Gary Bone (3-35), but the innings was taken on by wicketkeeper Harry Gregory (31) and Sri Lankan Ravi Karunarathna.
Gregory fell with 132 on the board in the 28th over and the visitors fought back through Andrew Libby (2-21) and Adam Snowdon (2-47).
However, from 166-7, Karunarathna (81) found fine support from Chris Willett (24) and Dan Ferris (15).
The Saints lost openers Dan Jarman (6) and Thevindu Dickwella (10) with just 17 on the board and although Curtis Dalby (32) and Mike Bone rebuilt, spinners Alex Lean (3-42) and Tom Fox-Dean (2-39) made crucial breakthroughs.
Bone and brother Gary got the equation down to 102 required off 95 balls, but once Mike (45) was caught off Dan Ferris (2-47), two run-outs plus two to Lean saw the end come quickly at 171.
Bottom side Truro are within two points of St Just despite losing at home to mid-table Werrington.
Solid contributions from Ben Smeeth (49), Thulina Dilshan (44), Mark Gribble (53) and Ben Jenkin saw the visitors make a competitive 207-9.
Opening bowlers Akhilesh Sahani (2-31) and Freddie Bose (3-33) shared five wickets as Rob Harrison (1-38) and Adam Price (1-29) gave little away in the middle.
Truro lost wickets throughout and never seriously threatened victory.
A superb spell of 3-15 from Dan Barnard reduced the hosts to 52-4 and although Sahani made 34, they fell to 123-8.
Harrison ensured some extra batting points with an excellent 42 in partnership with Bose (20), but Werrington were always ahead of the game.
Callington are just six points ahead of trouble after running into a remarkable display of hitting from Charlie Sharland.
The all-rounder struck 124 not out from just 65 balls with 14 fours and nine sixes as leaders Penzance chased down 191 in just 19.4 overs.
Earlier, Callington were going okay at 100-3, but when Graham Wagg (48) departed to Jonny Ludlam (2-34), it needed 48 from number seven Aidan Libby to give them a chance after they slipped to 133-7 which included 2-21 from skipper Brad Wadlan. Former Cally opening bowler Tom Dinnis took 3-33.
St Just picked up just four points from their defeat at Wadebridge who solidified second.
Opener Neil Curnow made 31, but nobody else could reach 20 in their 117 all out from 45.1 overs.
Four home bowlers – Lachlan Crump (2-25), Elliot Dunnett (2-23) and Matthew Lawrence (2-19) and Matt Robins (2-7) – all took a brace.
St Just’s bowlers, led by Chamikara Edirisinghe’s 2-17 from 10, made the Swans work hard and took five wickets, but Robins’ unbeaten 33 got the job done with Crump (25) and Alex Forward (24) also in the runs.
Helston remain third following a comfortable six-wicket victory over visiting Redruth.
The Reds could only muster 136 all out as Ryan Tonkin (3-36) and chairman Brad Bury (3-18) shared six either side of a fine 58 from Sri Lankan Dulash Udayanga.
Justin Beaton (2-20) got some early success, but Steve Jenkin (49), Karl Leathley (27) and Jayden Mitchell (21no) ensured a comfortable win.
