ECB CORNWALL PREMIER LEAGUE ROUND-UP - SATURDAY, JULY 5
Truro 218-9 (45), Helston 219-7 (44.1)
STEVE Jenkin made a superb 92 as Helston moved up to third in the table with a thrilling three-wicket victory at Truro.
The Blues found themselves in trouble at 113-6 thanks to the brilliance of Neil Ivamy (4-20 off 9), but Jenkin’s 91-ball knock which contained 12 fours, saw him add 101 with Aussie Harry Saunders (25no) as they passed the target with five balls to spare.
Earlier, Helston chose to bowl in a match reduced to 45 overs because of the morning rain which wiped out matches at both Penzance and St Just, but saw the in-form Harry Phillips and skipper Charlie Kent put on 74 in 17 overs before Kent (40 off 47) picked out Jayden Mitchell at cover off Gavin Tregenza.
Tregenza (3-38 off 9) struck again soon after as Indian pro Akhilesh Sahani went for a single (86-2), but Truro regrouped as Phillips was joined by brother Ted in a stand of 66 before Harry was lbw to Sunshine Osmont for 56.
Wickets then fell at regular intervals as Saunders took 5-38 from his nine overs. Phillips made 63 from 76 balls, but nobody else bar a quick 17 from Scott Kellow, could provide the fireworks as they finished on 218-9.
Helston got through the new ball unscathed as they reached 62-0 after 14 overs, but soon ran into Ivamy.
Dan Jenkin was the first to go for 28 when he skied a catch to Rob Harrison off Ivamy, while Billy Taylor (25) glanced a catch down the leg-side off Freddie Bose.
Ivamy’s left-arm spin soon accounted for Karl Leathley who swept a catch out to deep square-leg, while he later struck twice in successive balls.
Overseas player Jayden Mitchell was bowled slog sweeping for eight, while Mark Jenkin was bowled next ball.
Osmont made six before being lbw to Kellow (2-38), but Jenkin and Saunders got the equation down to 36 off the final 30 balls.
Runs kept coming and although Jenkin was bowled by Kellow aiming a big shot into the leg-side, Tregenza struck Sahani for the winning boundary as Helston moved to within 14 points of joint leaders Wadebridge, who they welcome on Saturday, and Penzance.
Grampound Road 135 (28.5/30), Wadebridge 127-3 (23.1/27).
WADEBRIDGE took advantage of Penzance’s cancellation at home to St Austell to go top of the table with a comfortable seven-wicket victory at home to Grampound Road.
Fresh off his 8-21 against Werrington the week before, Callum Wilson (2-34) soon reduced the Roadies to 9-2 in a match reduced to 30 overs.
The dangerous Antony Angove (18) soon edged Lachlan Crump behind, and when Tom Orpe was out for 24, it was 66-5.
Sri Lankan pro Ravi Karunarathna (38) was involved in stands of 30 and 21 with Harry Matthews (8) and Chris Willett (16), but once he departed the end came at 135 after 28.5 overs.
Wadebridge sent T20 opener James Turpin out to open and he and Matt Robins raced to 26-0 after two overs before Turpin (15) edged Angove behind.
But the Swans proved too strong despite a further shower making the target 122 off 27 as after Robins (44) and Matt Rowe (14) did the early work, Crump (32no) and Wilson (11no) made no mistake.
