GRAMPOUND Road will take on fellow ECB Cornwall Premier League side Wadebridge in tonight’s Hawkey Cup final at St Austell Cricket Club (6pm).
Both sides are enjoying highly-encouraging campaigns so far with the Roadies making a fine fist of staying up after only being promoted despite finishing as runners-up in County Division One last term, while the Swans are second in the table and pushing Penzance for a second Premier Division crown in three years.
Grampound’s run to the final, which started in the last eight, has a distinctly St Austell feel to it.
They took on the Saints’ seconds in the last eight and chased down their 141-9 for the loss of just three wickets with 17 balls to spare.
St Austell’s first team arrived for the semi-final on Wednesday, May June 11, but their batting failed to fire as a home attack led by Antony Angove’s 3-16, restricted the Saints to 116-7.
The Roadies were then led to victory by Angove’s patient 25 before Sri Lankan pro Ravi Karunarathna’s 32 accelerated them over the line which was achieved by five wickets thanks to Harry Gregory (17no) and Jack Mingo (9no).
Wadebridge won by six runs at much-fancied Callington a day earlier having only posted 129-8.
The chase saw Cally never quite get themselves ahead and ended on 123-8.
The Hawkey Cup is under new sponsorship for the first time in several years this summer.
For decades the much-loved T20 competition was known as the Clive Rosevear Insurance Hawkey Cup, but following Clive’s passing in 2022, his son Nick has decided to pass the baton on with Phil Lafferty, owner of The Britannia Inn and Waves Restaurant agreeing to take it on.
Phil and Nick were recently joined by Cornwall Cricket League chairman Stuart Wilder to do the honours.
