ECB CORNWALL PREMIER LEAGUE (SATURDAY, JUNE 7)

Werrington 40 (21.5/32), Penzance 43-0 (7/32).

CHAMPIONS Penzance saw their fearsome pace quartet produce a remarkable performance to dismantle Werrington by ten wickets at St Clare on Saturday.

On a day where the weather had a huge say in the top two divisions and wiped out the majority of games across the county, Penzance won the toss and chose to field.

Another shower meant play eventually got underway an hour and 40 minutes late at 2.40pm as a 32-over game.

But the following 21.5 overs will go down in home folklore.

Tommy Sturgess got the ball rolling by dismissing John Moon in the first over via a leading edge.

Adam Hodgson followed when he top-edged former Tron favourite Tom Dinnis, before former captain Ben Smeeth was castled by Sturgess (10-3).

Sri Lankan pro Thulina Dilshan fell to Dinnis for just four, before Dinnis (4-13 off 7) dismissed best mate Mark Gribble and George Rickard to leave the visitors 25-6.

Such is the luxury of riches in the home attack, stand-in skipper Jack Paull then brought on Pakistani pro Mehran Sanwal and left-arm speedster Josh Croom.

They soon dismissed the rest of the Werrington line-up as nobody made more than Nick Lawson’s nine as the end came at 40.

Sanwal ended with 2-6 from his four overs, while Croom had 2-7 from 3.5.

The chase was over in seven overs as openers Christian Purchase and Jack Paull were unbeaten on 23 and 20 respectively.

Helston 172 (41.1/42), St Austell 66-5 (12.1/25).

ST AUSTELL dropped to fourth behind Penzance after their clash at Helston was abandoned.

The match was reduced to 45 overs and then 42 overs before a ball was bowled, but after losing a seemingly crucial toss, home captain Dan Jenkin got off to a flying start alongside Billy Taylor.

When he was bowled by Adam Snowdon with the score at 64, Jenkin had struck 47 from just 48 balls.

Taylor (47 off 56) and Steve Jenkin (31 off 54) added 39 before off-spinner Gary Bone bowled Taylor and left-arm spinner Andrew Libby (1-29 off 9) dismissed dangerous Aussie Jayden Mitchell for nought.

Jenkin and Sunshine Osmont (22 off 45) continued to lay the platform, but once Jenkin was dismissed by Bone (2-29 off 9), the Saints roared back as Mike Bone (3-29 off 7) and Ben Sleeman (3-25 off 4.1) took three apiece.

Osmont’s dismissal made it 155-6 before the Blues could only edge their way to 172 all-out with five balls unused.

St Austell pro Thevindu Dickwella (8) attacked and after striking two boundaries, was bowled by Ryan Tonkin off the fifth ball of the innings.

Eight for one soon became 12-4 as Tonkin (3-18 off 5) and Mitchell (2-9 off 3) ran riot.

The rain gave the Saints the chance to regroup and although Tonkin dismissed Sleeman, the game was reduced to 25 overs with the Saints needing 142.

But after 12.1 overs with Alex Bone (29no) and Adam Snowdon (16no) at the wicket and the score at 66-5, the players went off to never return.

With the chase having not reached the minimum of 20 overs to constitute a match under the DLS Method, the match was abandoned as Helston took 11 points to St Austell’s 12.
