Bond Timber Cornwall Cricket League County Division One round-up – Saturday, August 23

CAMBORNE require six points from their final game at home to Perranporth to win the title despite losing by two wickets at third-placed Hayle.

Aussie Josh Fontana made 60 early on, but it was skipper Alfie MacDonald’s 96 that got Camborne up to 211-8. County all-rounder Dan Lello took 4-33.

Former Cornwall captain Tom Sharp (46) and Lello (50) both got in as Hayle reached 168-6, but after Matt Lello made 25, it was dad Paul (22no) that held his nerve. Fontana (3-43) and MacDonald (2-27) also shared five wickets.

Champions Beacon ensured the race went to the final day as they demolished Newquay by 133 runs.

Jordan Thomas struck 101 as the hosts amassed 276-9 from their 50 overs, nobody else making more than stand-in opener Stephen Wiseman’s 44.

Aussie Toby Chillingworth (2-39) and Jack Howarth (2-43) kept the runs down.

Newquay were going well at 69-1 with Tommy Rodda (49) set, but his departure at 90-2 saw the coastal club crumble against Callum Edgcombe (3-44) and Ben James (5-37).

At the bottom, St Erme are relegated despite beating St Austell Seconds by three wickets at Castle Field.

With Roche winning at Falmouth, it means the final round of games start with Roche five points clear of St Austell with one side to go down.

At St Erme, Steve Raven (65) and Jack Mallet (35) helped the Saints reach 132-1.

That became 168-2 before they lost seven wickets for just 14 as spinners Rakesh Seecharan (3-23) and Henry Hocking (4-39) ran riot. Charlie Mitchell took 2-5 at the end.

St Erme needed to win, but with Roche also victorious, it did not matter. Kyle Van Rooyen blasted 71 before falling with 96 on the board, but Dan Foulds (35), Tom Bunt (19) and Mitchell (13no) got the job done. Qasim Jamal took 3-25 late on.

Roche were 40-run winners at Falmouth who require five points on the final day to guarantee their status.

Five batsmen passed 20 in Roche’s 197 all out as Liam Philips led the way with 32. Haydn Ayres was the pick of the bowlers with 4-27.

Falmouth found themselves 83-6 despite James Tomlinson’s 30, and although Aidan Carter made 51 not out to earn themselves some bonus points, they finished on 157-8.

Stewart May (2-13) and Ryan Clark (2-18) went at less than two an over.

Paul cemented fifth with a five-run success at fourth-placed Perranporth.

Joe Sharp (52), Matthew Skewes (45) and Ross Williams (40) were in the runs in their 202 all out as Tyler Murrell claimed 3-45. James Hall was the pick with 2-11 from his 10 overs.

Perranporth’s innings saw them race to 49-0, however they lost wickets in clusters throughout.

Cameron Bishop made a quickfire 35 and Murrell 23, but at 192-8 with Hall set on 45 they had a chance.

But he and Jack Marshall-Clack were bowled by Michael Fitchett (4-44) as Paul made it five wins on the spin.
