Mention it quietly down at Poltair, but St Blazey could clinch the South West Peninsula League premier west title on their local rivals’ pitch on Good Friday.

If Wendron United fail to win at  their local rivals Mullion tomorrow evening, the Green & Blacks would be crowned champions if they beat AFC St Austell the following day (11 am kick-off).

Meetings between the two clubs always have an edge but even more so this time around with former Lillywhites manager Phil Lafferty back in charge at Blazey and his side likely to include former Town legends Will Tinsley and Martin Giles.

After Blazey’s 5-2 win over Launceston on Saturday, Lafferty told the Voice: “Onto a tough away day at our neighbours on Good Friday and yet again another team likely to want to spoil any potential celebration for us, so we will have to all be at our best at Poltair.”

Meanwhile, after a 2-2 draw at Wadebridge, St Austell’s outgoing manager Mark Smith said: “If we can perform like that again on Good Friday then we’ll be well set to disrupt St Blazey’s title charge, so we’re looking forward to the game.”

Lafferty picked out teenager Rio Ward for special praise after he capped his man of the match performance against the Clarets with the side’s fifth goal.

He said: “Rio has been incredible for us this season and as a 17-year-old product of our recently added youth section with St Blazey Youth and our own Under 18s team, he is a prime example of the talent on our doorsteps which the club will hopefully long continue to develop.”

Tinsley missed the Launceston game with a back injury sustained at work but is expected to be back on Good Friday.
