Two local women are set to inspire communities across Cornwall this summer as they use their personal weight loss journeys to help others transform their lives through Slimming World.

Jane, from Roche, and Maria Majid, from St Austell, are both re-launching Slimming World groups, bringing not only practical support for weight loss but also powerful stories of resilience, determination and personal change.

For Jane, her journey began nearly three decades ago. After losing an impressive 4½ stone in 1997, she has successfully maintained her weight loss for most of that time and remains an active member of a Slimming World group in Bodmin. Now, she is relaunching the Roche group with a mission to support others facing similar challenges.

The group will officially relaunch at 6.30pm on Wednesday July 1 2026 at Roche Football Social Club, offering a welcoming space for both new and returning members.

Jane believes her own experience allows her to connect deeply with those looking to lose weight.

“Slimming World completely changed my relationship with food,” she said. “What I love most about Food Optimising is that no food is banned. It’s not about deprivation or strict dieting — it’s about learning healthy habits that fit into everyday life.”

Jane’s group will offer weekly support, encouragement and practical advice, helping members build sustainable habits while still enjoying everyday life, from family meals to social occasions.

Just a few miles away in St Austell, another powerful story is unfolding.

Maria Majid’s journey into Slimming World came at a deeply difficult time in her life. After the devastating loss of her identical twin sister, Michelle, Maria turned to food for comfort, gaining more than three stone and losing the confidence she once had.

Determined to regain control of her health and happiness, Maria joined Slimming World in July 2025. With support from her local group and a commitment to change, she has since lost over three stone, reaching a healthy weight and rediscovering her confidence.

Now, Maria is channelling that transformation into a new career as a Slimming World Consultant, re-launching her own group at Bethel Methodist Church in St Austell, with sessions every Saturday morning.

“Slimming World has completely changed my life,” Maria said. “It’s about so much more than losing weight. It gave me support, friendship and belief in myself at a time when I needed it most. Becoming a Consultant means I can help others find that same hope and confidence.”

Both women share a common belief that weight loss is about more than numbers on a scale. At the heart of their groups is a focus on community, compassion and understanding — offering a non-judgemental environment where members can share experiences, celebrate successes and support one another through challenges.

Slimming World’s Food Optimising plan plays a key role in their approach, encouraging members to enjoy a wide variety of foods without strict dieting or deprivation, helping to build long-term, healthy habits.

As Jane prepares to reopen the Roche group and Maria launches her St Austell sessions, both are driven by a shared passion: helping others realise that lasting change is possible.

Together, they are bringing renewed energy and support to their local communities, proving that even in the face of life’s biggest challenges, it’s possible to rebuild confidence, improve health and inspire others along the way.
