Gorsedh Kernow has announced the winners of this year’s Young People Awards.

The judges were delighted with the quality and sense of pride in Cornwall, its landscape, history, culture and people in this year’s submissions. 

In particular they were delighted to receive an increased number of school submissions in particular from Madron, Mousehole, Trewirgie, Crowan, Luxulyan, Treloweth and Cusgarne primaries and Fowey Academy as well as music ensembles led by Cornwall Music Service Trust.

Pol Hodge, Grand Bard, said: “It is always a pleasure to see how passionate young people are about Cornwall and its culture which they express with confidence and joy through music, language and art. Bryntin.”

The winners will join the adult award ceremony in Padstow on September 1st.

First prize in the Yeth Kernewek (Cornish language) section for KS1, under 7 class went to Trewirgie Nursery and Infants, Redruth, for their Cornish phrase book and recordings.

First prize in the individual group went to Alana Tovey and Evie Shorten, of Treloweth School, Redruth, for ‘The Orangutan that Lost its Home’.

Joint second prize went to Eloisa Naylor of Trewirgie Infant School for her illustrated Cornish phrase book, and Lexi Pascoe of Trewirgie Infant School for her illustrated phrase book of her favourite words.

In KS2, for ages eight to 11, first prize went to Noor and Ula Tresidder Tonkin: for their three illustrated stories entitled ‘Tales from an Argos’. 

Commended

Noor and Ula were also commended for their Kernewek film ‘Yth eson ni ow mos dhe Helgh Ors’ - ‘We’re all going on a Bear Hunt’, Michael Rosen.  

The next category was Ilow Kernewek (Cornish music), with the Ks1 winners being Ash Class from Luxulyan School with ‘Mitten Da’.

In KS2 the winners were Schooner Class, of Mousehole School, for ‘Hard Rock Cornish Miner’ with percussion.

Second prize went to Madron School with ‘Fatla Genes’ and commended were: Crowan School’s ‘A Pen Bloth Lowen’; Lugger Class, Mousehole School, ‘Gorthugher Da’; Playwest, St Piran’s Furry; Jemima Barnard, Cusgarne School, ‘Cornwall My Home’ on the piano.

In the KS3 class (ages 12-18) the winners were Cornwall Youth Chamber Choir with ‘Hungan’.

KS2 film winners were Madron School with ‘The Giant who Stole Christmas’.

 Emmy Joyce of Cusgarne School near Truro won the Studhyens, KS1, class with ‘A Study of Choughs’.

In KS2 first prize went to  Merryn Joyce, also of Cusgarne School, for ‘A Study of Carn Marth’.

Marissa Barnard of Cusgarne School won first prize for her creative writing piece’ Marissa’s Cornwall’.

In the art section the KS1 winners were Beech Class of Luxulyan with ‘Why I Love Cornwall’, while first prize for art and design at KS2 level went to Lara Moores, of Luxulyan School with ‘Nans Husys Game’, a board game for Picrous Day set in Luxulyan.

Individual winner was Isla Topps, of Cusgarne School, for her wheal drawn with bamboo quill and liquid gall oak ink.

Oak Class at Luxulyan School were also commended for their drawings of Treffry Viaduct and Anwen Knights for their watercolour of  Wheal Coates Mine. 

Finally, for KS3, first prizes were awarded to Ebony Doney, Lily Love, Poppy Gill, Mae Pearce, Charley Stockley of Fowey River Academy for their Lostwithiel wall murals.
