THE sitting Truro mayor was elected for a second term at a ceremony that took place in Truro Methodist Church last night (Monday, May 11).
Cllr Chris Wells was proposed by Cllr Steven Webb and seconded by Cllr James Tucker. He will continue to be supported by mayoress Nicola Carveth, deputy mayor Cllr Loïc Rich and his consort, Cllr Sarah Douglas-Martin.
Cllr Wells presented selected highlights of his first year in alignment with the two key priorities of his mayoralty: young people and the growth and encouragement of community groups. These included the topping-out ceremony for Truro School’s new music centre in June, and the 20th anniversary Young and Talented Cornwall procession in November; to welcoming visitors from Germany and France with Truro’s twinning associations, and celebrating Sri Lankan New Year in Hendra Hall last month.
“I hope I can continue to fulfil the expectations of those that have placed their trust in me,” he said. “It really is a great honour and privilege to be able to serve as the mayor of Truro.”
Cllr Steven Webb proposed Cllr Wells “to continue your great work in the community with the youth, and to continue enabling us as a council to drive forward in unique stoic, compassionate and stable manner”.
He added: “When things go terribly wrong, we all feel it; but when things go well, when good decisions are being made, when steady leadership is quietly holding everything together, nobody hears a word. The good work Chris has been getting on with quietly deserves to be shouted about a lot louder.
“His steadfast stewardship should never be underestimated. When things do go terribly wrong, you are very glad he is the one sitting in that chair. Thank you, Chris, for your wisdom, your ability to listen, and the calm and steady way you have served this city.”
