The Lions Club of Truro raised £1,445 over the festive period, through its annual Christmas hamper draws at Truro Pannier Market and cash collections at the city’s waterfront Tesco store.
The proceeds will be donated to the club’s principal charities - Cornwall Hospice Care and Age UK Cornwall & Isles of Scilly - plus other local good causes.
Tesco allowed Lions to carry out two day-long cash collections for charities including Cornwall Refuge Trust, Cornwall Community Foundation, Truro Homeless Action Group (THAG), Devon and Cornwall Food Action Group, Penhaligon’s Friends, St Petrocs and Truro Foodbank.
Members also manned a fundraising stall in the Pannier Market three days a week in the run-up to Christmas, selling raffle tickets for hampers filled with goodies from Tesco, the Co-op, Marks and Spencer, Sainsbury's and Waitrose. Lampier's Butchers of Threemilestone contributed to a £30 meat voucher.
Hamper winners were drawn on December 23 by town crier Lionel Knight and delivered on the same day. The lucky recipients were Sarah Hooper (ticket 413), Dan Wicks and partner Emily (ticket 269), sisters Ann Haynes and Sue Clifton (ticket 475), and Christine Watt (ticket 140).
Lion President Julian Collinson described the fundraising campaign as “very successful, raising a fantastic amount of money”.
He added: “This was only possible due to the wonderful support from the people of Truro and surrounding areas . A big thank you to all who visited us and very generously entered the draws and donated at Tesco.”
Mr Collinson also thanked stores for their generous hamper donations, John Roach of Truro Pannier Market for his valuable support, and Truro Lions, partners and friends for volunteering at the market and at Tesco.
