CARL Riding has been appointed as Truro and Penwith College’s next principal and chief executive officer (CEO), ahead of the retirement of current principal Martin Tucker.
An accomplished senior leader, Carl has extensive experience across further and higher education. He is currently vice principal for employer partnerships and adult provision at Newcastle and Stafford Colleges Group, where he has helped deliver back-to-back Ofsted Outstanding ratings.
To ensure fairness, transparency and sector expertise, the recruitment process was supported by an external specialist agency and the FE Commissioner’s team. Following final interviews on November 27, the Board of Governors was unanimous in its selection of Carl as the college’s next principal.
Robert Townsend, chair of the Corporation, said: “We were delighted with the exceptionally high quality of applicants, reflecting the college’s strong reputation and future ambition. Carl demonstrated outstanding leadership, strategic insight and a clear commitment to learners, staff and the communities we serve. His achievements and values align perfectly with the direction of the College as we look to the future.”
Mr Riding said: “I am delighted and proud to be joining Truro and Penwith College as its next principal. The college plays a vital role in Cornwall’s education and skills landscape, and I am committed to providing strong, visible leadership as we continue to drive high standards and build for the future.
“With such talented staff and motivated learners, the college is well placed to continue making a significant difference locally, regionally and beyond. I look forward to supporting its continued success.”
Carl will join the college on March 16 as principal and CEO designate, working alongside Mr Tucker during a short transition period before formally assuming the role. Mr Tucker’s final day as principal will be March 31, 2026.
