THE town council in Newquay has backed a campaign to install traffic light controlled pedestrian crossings at Nansledan.

Councillors voted to write to Kate Kennally, the CEO of Cornwall Council, Jack Thomas, the director of highways and council leader Leigh Frost, urging the unitary authority to erect the safety measure along the A3059.

It follows Tretherras and Porth Cornwall councillor Kevin Towill and resident Jo Ingram appealing to the town council to support the scheme at its meeting on Wednesday, June 4.

Campaigners argue there is nowhere safe to cross since the route fully opened due to traffic getting heavier.

Jo Ingram said: “I live on the Rialton side of Nansledan so I have to cross the roundabout to come in. I have children at the nursery and it’s getting really dangerous to cross.

“We have got a 30mph road right by a nursery entrance. There are disabled people and visually impaired people who live on my side who get in their cars to do a two-minute journey because they do not want to cross by the roundabout.

“I don’t think a zebra crossing would be enough or a 20mph speed reduction as much as that is needed. It would need to be traffic light crossings to stop traffic.

“I would say it needs to be at least three. It needs two on the roundabout and one outside the nursery. I appreciate it would be expensive.

‘I would hate this to be retrospective after an accident has happened.”

Mayor “Given the sense of urgency to add weight to the calls Cllr Towill has made around the safety in that area we will write to Cornwall Council.”

The Duchy and Cornwall Council stated they will monitor traffic and pedestrian safety in the area as the community grows and consider any further measures that are needed.
