THRILLING motorsport action will be taking place on the roads at Watergate Bay over the weekend.

The Watergate Bay Sprint will be held on Saturday, September 20 and Sunday, September 21.

Around 70 cars will be competing in the event, which is held along a 900-metre stretch of the B3276 between Porth and Watergate Bay. Various categories have been organised including under 17s and electric vehicles.

Cornwall Council has approved a road closure for the Watergate Bay Sprint event, which will temporarily close Watergate Road and associated paths in Newquay on September 20 and 21 between 6am and 7pm.

Money raised will be donated to Cornwall Air Ambulance.

A spokesperson for The Watergate Sprint said: “Nestled on the stunning and highly popular North Cornwall coast between Newquay and Padstow; after making history in 2018 as a hillclimb, the two-day closed road speed event became a Sprint in 2021 and that format continues to this day. Watergate Bay Sprint provides competitors with a unique closed-road challenge and spectators with superb viewing.

“The road closure is necessary for public safety with a diversion route to be provided on-site. The event organisers will endeavour to reopen the road by 5.30pm each day.”
