TRURO Cathedral officials have confirmed that Canon Alan Bashforth will not be returning to his duties, following an independent safeguarding risk assessment.

A statement from the Chapter of Truro Cathedral published online revealed that The Rt Revd Hugh Nelson, Bishop of St Germans, met with Canon Alan recently to discuss the outcome of the assessment.

“Alan has received the report and has had the opportunity to provide feedback to the assessor,” the statement reads. “After careful consideration of the findings and following appropriate professional advice, Bishop Hugh has made the decision that Alan will not be returning to his duties at the cathedral.

“We recognise that this decision may have a significant emotional impact on those involved and affected. In line with our commitment to compassionate and respectful processes, we have ensured that staff and volunteers are informed in a timely and supportive manner.

“Alan will now be supported as he considers options for his future. His suspension will remain in place during this time and until the next steps are clear.”

The statement continued: “For clarity, the requirement to undertake the Safeguarding Risk Assessment was not a result of police investigation or a safeguarding concern involving children. To respect the dignity and privacy of everyone involved, no further public comments will be made during this period.

“We are deeply grateful to everyone for their patience, understanding and care throughout this process.”

Revd Canon Alan Bashforth was appointed Canon Chancellor in 2014, a role holding responsibility for the Cathedral’s work of public theology, theological reflection and Christian education. He was previously vicar of St Agnes.

Canon Alan was suspended in February this year “for up to three months following a safeguarding complaint relating to a vulnerable adult”. A cathedral spokesperson said at the time: “Suspension is to facilitate the investigation of the complaint and to safeguard the complainant.”
