THE first steps are being taken to ensure Newquay is not detrimentally impacted by flooding in the future due to the impacts of climate change.

Newquay Town Team and Newquay Bid are hosting a meeting at Trenance Cottages on Friday, May 23 at 10am.

Cornwall Community Flood Forum will discuss how future climate change might lead to flooding in the Trenance and Trevemper areas and what steps if any the town needs to consider now.

There will be a presentation of known facts and issues, which will be followed by an open discussion around any concerns that people and businesses may have.

Shirley Williams from Newquay Town Team said: “When Newquay Town Team gathered the background information in 2022 about Newquay, it realised that all of the town’s electric supply comes into Newquay via the Trevemper Electric sub-station, and that there is a garage and a sewerage pumping station alongside the Gannel as you come into town.

“The one in 30 and one in 100-year Cornwall Council maps show the potential for flooding in these areas along with Trenance Gardens and Trenance Leisure Park.

“It would require a set of circumstances coming together for this to happen, but Cornwall Community Flood Forum has offered to help us look at the area and ascertain what the risks might really be - could we see Trevemper and Trenance Hill roundabouts underwater for a period?

“How far back towards Newquay Zoo might the waters flow? What official flood plans might we need to think about now? and are there any steps we should take to mitigate the risk?

“The meeting is a first step to examine the evidence with experts so that the community and local authorities are able to determine if there are risks, what they are and what reasonable steps to take to mitigate and prepare for such.

“Local resident or anyone who simply has an interest are welcome to attend.”
