THE Shipwrights Arms, one of the county’s most iconic waterside inns, has been purchased by Rufus Taylor, drummer and son of Queen legend Roger Taylor, along with his partner.
The acquisition, backed by Roger Taylor himself, sees a new generation of Taylors stepping into the spotlight on the shores of the Helford River rather than a world stage. The deal was brokered by Jon Clyne, director at commercial property firm Charles Darrow.
The 18th-century Grade II listed freehouse, nestled in the heart of Helford, has benefited from over £1-million in recent investment, making it a standout offering in the Southwest hospitality market.
The inn combines traditional charm – low ceilings, exposed stone, flagstone floors – with a nautical twist and contemporary comforts.
Located 10 miles from Helston, and within reach of Falmouth and Truro, Helford is renowned for its natural beauty, sailing culture, and strong local community. The pub is a popular spot for local fishermen, visitors and sailors alike.
Jon Clyne said: "There was real pressure from the local community to ensure The Shipwrights Arms didn’t just change hands but found the right custodians. With Rufus, his partner, and the support of Roger Taylor – a true local at heart – the pub is in safe (and very rhythmically talented) hands."
While Roger Taylor is best known as Queen’s powerhouse drummer and the songwriter behind hits such as Radio Ga Ga, A Kind of Magic, and These Are the Days of Our Lives, his ties to Cornwall are deep-rooted.
Born in King’s Lynn, he was raised in Cornwall and attended Truro School. Now a local once more, he remains a passionate supporter of the region and will be keeping a watchful, proud eye on the project.
Rufus Taylor, who has made a name for himself touring with The Darkness and continuing the family’s musical legacy, and his partner will take on operational responsibility, bringing fresh energy to the pub while honouring its heritage.
Rufus commented: “The Shipwrights Arms has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. For me, it’s home and as everyone knows, an Englishman’s home is his castle. Therefore, I plan to give it the royal treatment.
“There’s no need to reinvent the wheel as the Helford community, which I have always been proud to be a part of, already knows that The Shipwrights is the jewel in the crown of the most beautiful part of the country.
“Accordingly, any changes will be subtle as we continue the traditions of a convivial family-friendly atmosphere with fresh fish, great food and music in a location blessed with natural beauty. I look forward to welcoming you all and raising a glass together.”
The Shipwrights Arms occupies a commanding position on the Helford River, with tiered terraces for 110+ guests, four deluxe newly built letting suites, a private jetty and slipway, owner’s accommodation and has received recent investment in excess of £1-million, the property is poised for an exciting future under new stewardship.
