THE owner of a Cornwall-based deli chain has dropped a legal challenge against a national publisher.

Sabzi owner Kate Attlee previously claimed Yasmin Khan’s cookbook of the same name, published by Bloomsbury, infringed her trademarked brand.

A former BBC MasterChef quarter-finalist, Ms Attlee, 37, launched Sabzi in 2019 and has branches in Truro, Falmouth, Padstow and Nansledan, near Newquay, alongside a website with an online store and a range of 14 products.

She named the company in a nod to her Iranian heritage, and claimed to have invested in trademarking the word Sabzi “to protect my brand at the beginning of its journey”.

But Bloomsbury defended its use of the word – Farsi for vegetables or greens – on the grounds it is “commonly used in restaurants around the UK to describe various vegetable dishes”.

A Bloomsbury spokesperson said: “We are pleased Kate Attlee has done the right thing and withdrawn her complaint. It has been our position from the outset that use of the descriptive term Sabzi as the title of Ms Khan’s cookbook does not constitute trademark use and does not infringe any IP rights. We wish Kate Attlee continued success with her deli business.”

A spokesperson for Ms Attlee said: “We are delighted the case was amicably resolved earlier this month, and Kate wishes to make no further comment on the matter.”
