Members of the Rotary Club of Truro Boscawen work hard throughout 2022 to support local, national and international charities.

A series of fund-raising events carried out by members during December raised more than £5,000.

An illustrated talk by Lawrence Hendra – one of the art experts on BBC TV’s Antiques Roadshow – in honour of his uncle, the late Vivian Hendra, a much-missed club member, held in the Burrell Theatre at Truro School at the beginning of the month raised almost £2,470 for the family’s chosen charities, Macmillan Cancer Support and Cancer Research UK.

This was followed by the club’s annual Families’ Christmas Lunch in mid-December which raised £260 for the Truro Foodbank.

During the week before Christmas Club members and other volunteers took their ‘barrel organ’ to Truro’s Sainsbury’s store where they played a selection of Christmas carols and music to entertain customers. The resulting collections amounted to an amazing £2,350, which will be given to the local Friends of St Petrocs and other local charities supported by the Rotary Club.

Thanking everyone who supported the fund-raising events, club president Frank Perry said: “The generosity of people in these times of hardship is quite staggering. We are very grateful to everyone who supported our events and would particularly like to thank Sainsbury’s for welcoming us to their store.”

Rotary International is one of the world’s largest networks of volunteers. Open to men and women over the age of 18, members give their time to support local groups and organisations and raise funds, enjoying themselves doing so.

The Rotary Club of Truro Boscawen works hard to raise money for international programmes such as End Polio Now, ShelterBox, and Ukrainian relief, and regularly supports a wide range of local community projects such as St Petrocs, the Truro Foodbank, and Cornwall Blood Bikes.

Each year the club also organise a number of specific events for young people and schools in the local area to help in their personal development.

These include the local rounds of the young writer competition, and youth speaks for primary schools, taking place later this month.
