A ROAD was closed and a train had to turn back following concerns for the welfare of a man on the Newquay viaduct on Sunday afternoon.
Police closed off Edgcumbe Avenue at about 3.40pm and the branchline train was stopped at Trencreek.
The train returned to Par Station where passengers clubbed together to pay for a taxi to get to Newquay.
A police spokesperson said: “We were called following a report of a concern for the welfare of a man on a viaduct in the area of Edgcumbe Avenue in Newquay.
“Emergency services attended, and a road closure was put in place. The man moved to a place of safety, and the road was reopened.”
Passenger Andy Sturt said: “We had a hard stop by the Police at Trencreek.
“We were informed by the driver of an incident unfolding ahead. After about 30 minutes being held at Trencreek, we were informed that the line into Newquay was now closed and GWR control was routing as back to Par.
“Naturally most passengers thought a drop off at Quint would be the best solution. This didn't happen which left us all rather perplexed.
“We were dropped off at Par without any replacement bus service and advised to use the local bus service to return to Newquay.
“At this point passengers clubbed together and ordered and shared taxis back to Newquay. 3.55pm turned into 6.45pm but generally everyone was accepting of the situation considering the incident unfolding.”
GWR stated on social media: "Due to trespassers on the railway between Par and Newquay all lines are blocked. Train services running to and from these stations may be cancelled or delayed. Disruption is expected until the end of the day.”
It later stated: “Following trespassers on the railway between Par and Newquay all lines are now open. Train services running to and from these stations are now running normally."
