A secondary school in St Austell has received a “good” rating from Ofsted following an inspection.

The inspectors said Poltair School was outstanding for behaviour and attitudes, leadership and management, and personal development.

Headteacher Mark Everett said: "We are thrilled that Ofsted has acknowledged the hard work and dedication we have invested in transforming Poltair from a school that had never before been recognised as ‘good’.

"We believe that the Ofsted rating of good is a fair reflection of the journey Poltair has undertaken and the progress we have made.

"We remain committed to providing the highest quality education and nurturing an environment where every student can build confidence and character."

Ofsted inspectors said: “There is a relentless drive to provide the best possible life chances for pupils. This is visible in the curriculum, the focus on pupils' character development and the exemplary conduct of pupils.

"The school ensures that all pupils, including those who are disadvantaged and those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), are able to succeed academically.

"Pupils' behaviour is exemplary and there is a culture of mutual respect.

“Staff are experts in their subjects and present information clearly."

Furthermore, inspectors highlighted the school's high expectations for student behaviour and aspirations for their futures, saying: "Poltair School has high expectations of pupils' behaviour and high aspirations for their futures."

A school spokesperson said: “This emphasis on both behaviour and academic achievement ensures that students leave Poltair prepared for success in their future endeavours.

“The good rating is a testament to the collective effort of the local community, staff, and students, whose commitment has been integral to the school's success.

“Poltair School extends heartfelt thanks to everyone involved for their hard work and dedication, without which this achievement would not have been possible.

“Since joining the Cornwall Education Learning Trust (CELT) in 2019, Poltair School has undergone a remarkable transformation, culminating in record-breaking GCSE results and securing a position among the top five secondary schools in Cornwall.

“The school's exceptional performance has led to it being heavily oversubscribed, confirming the high esteem in which it is held by the community.”
