COUNCIL chiefs hope to get the green light to make a pedestrian route safer between a Newquay beach and the town centre.
Cornwall Council plans to build a new footpath along the grass verge between the access road to the Glendorgal Hotel and the junction with Manewas Way, near Lusty Glaze Road
The unitary authority also proposes to create a pedestrian crossing at Manewas Way, and on Lusty Glaze Road to link the two existing footpaths and make it easier and safer for people to cross. The crossing upgrades will include tactile paving and other safety features.
The plans additionally include the reinstatement of existing double yellow lines.
A council spokesperson said: “We are proposing some pedestrian improvements on Lusty Glaze Road to enhance connection between Lusty Glaze Beach and Newquay town centre.
“We’re planning to create a safer and more accessible walking route from Lusty Glaze beach to Newquay town centre, using the scenic path along Barrowfield cliff. This will involve upgrading the current informal footpath and improving pedestrian crossings to make this scenic, coastal route easier and safer for everyone.
“These improvements aim to make walking routes safer and more accessible, especially via the newly enhanced cliff path.
“Originally, the project aimed to improve the shared-use path along the cliff edge all the way to the Lusty Glaze car park. However, due to programme constraints and funding deadline pressures, the work has been split into two phases.
“Phase one focused on delivering the feasibility study for the cliff section, which has now been successfully implemented on-site.
“Phase two involves developing feasibility options for the Lusty Glaze section. This phase is currently progressing, with the preferred option, selected by the client, being prepared for on-site delivery.”
A public consultation has been launched for people to have their say on the plans.
A council spokesperson said: “We’re inviting comments on a proposal to enhance pedestrian connectivity between Lusty Glaze Beach and Newquay town centre.
“If the responses to the consultation are mostly positive the scheme will progress to detailed design, subject to considering any proposals to improve the design. Let’s make Newquay safer and more walkable together.”
Tretherras Cornwall councillor Kevin Towill says the plans are “long overdue.”
Cllr Towill said: “I welcome another piece of the jigsaw puzzle of infrastructure needed for that side of Newquay.
“It is an important piece in enhancing the pedestrian infrastructure for people. It’s a renowned road at the moment for not being very pedestrian friendly. It is in my view long past the time we did something about it.”
People can comment on the scheme by visiting Cornwall Council’s Let’s Talk site, an on-line facility for viewing and responding to Council consultations, which can be accessed by visiting https://letstalk.cornwall.gov.uk/transport
Alternatively email [email protected], quoting the scheme name and reference, and indicating support or objection to the proposals.
The proposed scheme follows the walking and cycling path across the Barrowfields being extended to Lusty Glaze Beach, which was funded by the UK Government through the Shared Prosperity Fund.
