PLANS are proposed to remove flammable material from a residential apartment scheme in Newquay.

A planning application has been submitted to replace the existing flammable EPS render system with new fire safe render system at the Surfpods development in Henver Road.

The scheme also includes replacing existing flammable timber cladding and replace with anodised aluminium rain screen cladding and the removal of combustible insulation behind existing aluminium panels and reinstate existing or new matching panels.

The planning statement said: “The property comprises two blocks of residential apartments.

“Insulation on the existing building is combustible and presents a risk to the occupants in fire as evidenced by the Grenfell tragedy.

“The proposals arise from the need for fire safety remediation works to the external walls of an existing residential building and include the replacement of the existing expanded polystyrene insulated render system with a non-flammable render system of similar colour and finish.

“The replacement of the existing horizontal timber cladding to the external facades with a non-combustible aluminium plank system.

“Replacement of the existing aluminium panels which sit above polystyrene insulation and replacement with aluminium panels to closely match the existing on a non-flammable insulation.

“The existing external rendered facades will be renewed with a new render system on mineral wool backing. The selected system will closely match the existing in both

“The existing metal panels with flammable insulation behind will be stripped off and the insulation replaced.

“It is considered unlikely that the panels will be capable of re-use having been removed, if however, they are they will be reinstated.

“The timber cladding on this building represents a significant safety hazard to occupants. The timber cladding will be replaced with an anodised aluminium panel in slats to reflect the horizontal lined aesthetic of the existing timber.”
